(Moleskine Sketchbook 8x5, final page of 1st sketchbook)
I have a baby niece that I have not met yet. She's more than 6 months old now, and she doesn't know that I exist either. But I miss her, like how I miss her older sister KaQin, and her older brothers. I will my the effort so that me and my wife are to go back home next year and see her (and for my wife the family) for the first time. I know that the path I have chosen has set me and my family in Malaysia far apart, I just hope that they will understand that Uncle Alex is far away for a reason, and when there's a time when I am needed, I will be here waiting for them.
The sketch of KaRyn marks the final page of my first Moleskine Sketchbook, my first sketchbook that is actually completed. And I have a lot more to come, and I think I am going to start with the tiny one next and see how well that works out =)

Thank you everyone for your comments on my previous post, Gia. I still miss her terribly, but I will be strong for her.
Your portraits are always fantastic. This one is awesome, and this little girl is too cute and fun! It's hard, sometimes, being far away from family and friends, and not seeing the children grow up - I know that feeling, too.
ReplyDeleteLovely portrait,I'm really jealous I'm useless at faces.
ReplyDeleteShe is so beautiful, Alex, and I know you have captured her very essence here. I love how and what you journaled as well. So very sweet. You are the portrait master.
ReplyDeleteHey, I got my prize. It's posted here, on my flickr

but I wanted to say thank you again (and again!). I love it. What a wonderful thing to have one of your sketches!!
Congratulations on finishing your first Moleskine sketchbook and what a beautiful finish it was! It must be so hard living so far from your relatives. At least you hold them close in your heart.
ReplyDeleteAlex, thats a lovely sketch of KaRyn, Soo cute and I love it how you captured her eyes so well on paper... Its so cute!!! I too have family living far away, know the feeling too well.. So I really hope you and your wife will be able to go back soon and see everyone again.
ReplyDeleteI can identify with living far from your family, beautiful sketch!
ReplyDeleteCootchee-cootchee-coo..nicely done - great expression! It will be wonderful when you meet her.
ReplyDeleteYou will like the little moleskine, I think. The greatest thing is that it fits in a back pocket so you can take it everywhere you go! There is no rule against two at once, you know. :)
Dan is right when he says there's no rule, but I kind of can't deal with two at once. Between that and various other notebooks, I just get kind of nuts.
ReplyDeleteGreat portrait! She is so cute. Maybe one day when she's a bit older, she'll want to come to the States and see some things here, and then you can show her everything you know.
She's a cutie pie! Great sketch. Hope you get to meet soon.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Hopefully you'll see her face to face soon! She's a real cutie, and very lucky to have such a caring uncle. My aunt moved to south Africa when I was little, but she is still a hugely important part of my life, even though visits are less than frequent! It's not how you keep connected, it's just that you do!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful drawing of your niece. I can only imagine how hard it is to be away from your whole family. My sister just moved to Japan to live with her son and I sure miss her but I still get to visit other family members on occasion. This was a very nice finish to your first journal!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, how adorable!
ReplyDeletecongrats on finishing your sketchbook!!
I'm trying my hand at more portraits...need much more practice.
Your work is amazing!

I understand the 'missing the family' bit...it is why I moved back to Texas to begin with. Hope you get to visit them soon! Wonderful portrait!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing your first sketchbook! I recently finished three old ones that have been around for ages! Felt great!
It's nice to see I'm not the only one with a strange affection for paper products. The baby is a cutie, I see why you would miss her so much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great grand finale to your sketchbook. Isn't is so satisfying to finish that last page and have the untapped potential of a new one waiting in the wings? Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteShe is so cute, love her eyes!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for finishing the sketchbook! (Your photo of moleskines waiting to be filled in is just mouthwatering...:-P)
What a precious little one! Have fun with your new sketchbook - it's like a new adventure :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, AWESOME! And I am touched by your words of endearment for your Niece. A Beautiful portrait.
ReplyDeleteOh Alex, you did a beautiful piece of art here! She's just as cute as she can be. I know how much you miss her. I have 2 grandchildren that live quite a distance away, and I don't get to see them anywhere near as often as I'd like. hugs, nancy
ReplyDeleteSo cute;)
ReplyDeleteyour portraits are beautiful!
So clever of you to catch such character in a little one that you have never met! There's going to be some fun when you get together next year!
