I had a great Friday with my friend Jan from Sweden. We knew each other since 2005 at work(back in Malaysia), and he found a job for me later which brought me to Germany. We have not seen each other since he left Germany in 2008, and then I left Germany in 2009 and came here. And now we've just met again, in Houston. He is what I would call, a friend of 3 continents, and I think that's pretty awesome.
He invited me to go meet at his son's house who now resides here with a family and we spent a great Friday catching up and just relaxing. In the process, I met his beautiful family, his grandchildren.
So here's a quick sketch of one of the children on my long neglected Moleskine sketchbook. Brooke is 9 and she's a cheerleader and very athletic and smart. I will try to continue the series and draw the rest of the kids :)
(Pencil on Moleskine Sketchbook 3.5 x 5.5")
And here's me had a great dinner at Olive Garden with Jan and Kristina. Hope we get to do this at least once every year.
Thank you all again for your comments and for your time. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this blog alive again.
So happy for you, its always so lovely to reunite with great old friends. The drawing is great too, and again, I like how you can caputure the smiles so well and the light in the eyes.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mari. It's nice and hopefully the reunion will be an annual thing.
DeleteI hope you do keep filling your Moleskine with sketches like this! Nice to get back together with old friends too :)
ReplyDeleteYeah Cathy, that's my intention really :) Filling the Moleskine. It's still a little slow at the moment, but I will get there someday.
DeleteAbsolutely Gorgeous Alex!! I love your portraits.
ReplyDeleteThanks Clare ;)
DeleteYou know what I really like about this portrait? The smile. A open mouth smile is something that I have always found as a challenge to draw - how to make teeth look subtile..
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you reunited with your friends! :D
I appreciate it. Yeah for some reason, I already get pictures of people smiling wide. Not a bad thing actually, I love drawing people smiling =)
DeleteMy daughter smiles like that too from frame to frame all the photos end up looking the same. Great work once again Alex.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, yeah. I remember when I was little, I smiled only one way, which is SMILE BIG until my eyes cannot be seen. Thanks Mary.
DeleteSuch a great sketch, Alex, and so nice to reunite with friends after such a long time. Can't wait to see more of your sketchbook,
ReplyDeletexoxo
Yeah Vicki it was fun just hanging out. I don't have a lot of friends here to hang out with during the weekend, and this one had to come all the way from Sweden to do that with me :)
DeleteI will try my best to fulfill my blog title, and make it a weekly thing. Thanks.
So glad to see your work again, Alex ! These portraits are beautfiul and so lively; I just love the way you captured their expressions !
ReplyDeleteIt's good for you to be able to see old friends and share memories. I do hope you' ll get new acquaintances in your neighbourhood.
xoxo,
Martine
Thank you so much Martine :) It's nice to hear from you again. Yeah I need to get out more and meet my neighbors, I just love being inside too much.
DeleteI love your work. Keep sketching!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy :)
DeleteSweet.
ReplyDeleteIt seems wonderful to have a friend you have known for so long and in so many different places! Goodness, you have moved a lot! I think you do very well to keep up drawing with all the moves! Wonderful portrait Alex!
ReplyDeleteYeah Jennifer :) I moved a lot, maybe a little too much. But me and Jan somehow are able to get together every few years. Thanks
DeleteThat was a quick sketch!? Oh my, such a lovely piece!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, I said quick but I probably spent around 2 hours on it. Thanks.
DeleteYour portraits never cease to amaze me! Also it's so awesome that you and your friend have gotten together on 3 continents! nancy
